Richard G. Scott: a call for greater faith

Elder Richard G. Scott, a loving father, devoted husband, and leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,  has acquired a familiar tone and pattern to his general conference addresses--speaking to every individual of this world, religious or not.

In the first weekend of October, apostles of Christ's church, prepare and give sermons for these days of how we can become more like Jesus Christ. Because they are His representatives on earth.

Elder Scott, an apostle, made a call to every individual to Make the Excercise of Faith Your First Priority. This address was highly different than other speeches given by Elder Scott. He is one to often speak in a soft, loving, and quiet tone, as if to speak with great revenance to match the context. However, this time, he addressed all individuals with a greater plea and emotion in his voice, as if he was our concerned father.  Elder Scott, who in a sense--sighed with disappointment in his children. He spoke firmly and maybe with less gentleness. But his tone of voice and approach matched the message he shared.

Elder Scott's art of speaking is being able to address a general audience--many nationalities, many cultures, many ages, many countries, and yet is able to talk to the individual personally.

In his young adult life, Elder Scott had a very hard time looking at people right in the eyes. His sweet and loving wife, Jeanene, helped him overcome his fear and weakness, and now, Elder Scott has the piercing eyes that all feel he can look at everyone individually. As we learn more about the life of Elder Scott, we find how his life was just like everyone else. Trials, difficulties, challenges in careers and marriage, and for that very reason it makes sense why he speaks to us so personally of what we should do to be happy in life. This provides a strong sense of ethos, because he understands and can relate to us on an individual level without knowing us.

In this conference, his talk, addressing the individual and establishing four basic but essential habits in our life to overcome the trials and challenges we are given in this mortal life. This was extremely similar to his talk in April 2012, "How to Obtain Personal Revelation for Your Personal Life." Not only is the context parrallel, but his method in explaining and teaching.  Elder Scott breaks it down into simple steps for our better understanding. And after doing this in other talks this appeals to logos. In every talk given,  Elder Scott appeals to the audience through his tone of voice and soft nature.

  1. I loved Elder Scott's talk this conference. I felt like it was very different from his normal talks because he was very lovingly bold. He was still able to break it down for us in simple steps so that we are better able to apply it to our lives.
