Character
- A very sick man. His sickness has overcome his body because of his transgressions. He is filled with sorrow and is begging missionaries to heal him.
I'm sure that this man felt similarly to Tori's mom. I'm sure that she felt those same emotions, wishing that someone could heal her.
Plot
- A missionary is caught by guards and taken to the King. The missionary pleads to be a servant to the King and to have his life spared. The missionary becomes a great servant, following all the commands of the King to the absolute best of his abilities. The missionary gains the Kind's respect and shares the Gospel with him. The King and his wife are converted to the Gospel.
This plot could connect to Jeremy's post. All the missionary wanted to do in this story is serve to the best of his ability in any way he could. That is what Jeremy was doing with the older woman.
Dialogue
- The queen says to the missionary: "The servants of my husband have made it known unto me that thou art a prophet of a holy God, and that thou hast power to do many mighty works in his name. Therefore, if this is the case, I would that ye should go in and see my husband, for he has been laid upon his bed for the space of two days and two nights; and some say that he is not dead, but others say that he is dead and that he stinketh and that he ought to be placed in the sepulcher but as for myself, to me he doth not stink." Alma 19:4-5
This reminds me of Josh's post about the death of a girl in his high school. I imagine the feeling that there is no possible way it could of happened was very real to all the students the day the tragedy was announced. This connects to how the queen was feeling at the time she was being told her husband was dead, she simply could not believe it.
Setting
- One of the most pivotal moments of this story happens in the field next to the river where the sheep go to drink water. In this setting the missionary defends the flocks, cutting off the arms of the offenders.
There could be a connection to the experience described in Darren's post with this. A missionary doing all that he can to fulfill his responsibilities still combats adversity in his daily activities.
Narrative Point of View
- The missionary illustrates how he sees the hand of God in all that has happened. He sees that the Spirit of the Lord has poured out upon the people, for which he is very grateful.
I think that this element could connect to many of our posts. With our Latter-day Saint view on the world, many of us see the hand of God in all of our experiences and can find a way to connect him to the stories we tell.
I think that sharing the character of Alma and how he became the person he did could be something that many people relate really well with. Many people feel broken at times, and knowing that they can become better and move on and still live good, successful lives is very comforting. I think messages like this are very motivating and uplifting, and I think messages like this are very helpful because I believe most people simply want to improve and get through hard times.
