A unique element of the Mormon
culture is the medium it provides for members to try their hand at public
speaking. This allows members to be exposed to many different styles and forms
of public speaking. Witnessing a variety of forms and styles of oratory allows
us as a whole to observe and improve our oratory.
We have a specific culture when it comes to giving talks in Sacrament meetings and other opportunities we are given to speak. The speaker begins with his name, a joke to draw attention, summary of themselves, which is then followed up by what appears as a patchwork quilt of scriptures, prophet’s words, and some personal words. One speaker, who I admire greatly, embodies what Mormon Oratory should progressively seek to become. This great speaker effectively used ethos in establishing a connection with his audience through personal experiences, pacing, and effective word choice. His ability to not just summarize General Authorities’ words but also make them come alive and burn within our hearts was only enhanced by the well-organized structure he presented. Everything was fresh, as if you were led by his hand point-to-point on a new and exciting path.
This style and form of speaking captivated the audience and probably led to more information and feelings to be retained after. The difference between him and the average speaker was immense, and showed the potential of how each one of us could grow and develop as orators. As our oratory culture continues to mature and flourish, we will become more edified by the Spirit as well as become a positive influence on today’s society.
The comic is great! I would say most of the time it is unfortunate to have the custom of telling jokes before talks...just because most of the time the punch line is demolished and it just becomes awkward and at times irrelevant. But then I must admit, that sometimes the jokes have made me laugh out loud, though trying to be reverent... It's a part of sacrament talks that I'm sure will last awhile...
ReplyDeleteAs you were describing this speaker though, a few other people came to mind who elicit similar responses and carry themselves in certain ways. Good public speakers are personable and charismatic. The church is unique in that starting at age 3 we are able to get up and share messages with others. I think it is something that truly helps us to become able to talk to people, share our thoughts and testimonies and learn from preparing as well. It's a great thing, and hopefully will foster more people like who you mentioned above!
