Who Is Waiting On Us?

"YE ARE AN EXAMPLE TO THE WORLD: FOLLOW NOT AFTER THEM!" This powerful and enthusiastic statement is found in Orson F. Whitney’s speech, “Home Literature.” Who are the people he is referring to in this declaration? This call to action is made to LDS people all over the world. It is a plea to distinguish ourselves among the artists of the world.

To many this means taking a step into the unknown and creating works that will cause great contemplation among readers, viewers, listeners, etc. Nephi Anderson boldly takes the first step into the unknown world of LDS literature in his novel, Added Upon. His distinct style is one that will cause great pondering among his readers for years to come.

I found one of the most interesting aspects of his writing style was his incorporation of many different themes. Throughout the text multiple themes can be found, but to me the most intriguing theme was of family history work. Through establishing stories, names, and personalities for the people waiting for their own work to be done, Anderson provides an opportunity for the reader to make a connection with these characters. This gives the reader a perspective that I think many people do not take on family history work. Questions begin to formulate in readers’ minds; what would it be like to be waiting for saving ordinances? What are their stories?

I believe that one of the greatest accomplishments of a writer is giving readers a new perspective on commonly discussed topics. When a writer is able to do that they can literally change lives; in Nephi Anderson’s case, both here and in the next life.

  1. I noticed the theme of family history too, and especially the theme of a purpose in life. After reading your post, I am now thinking that one of the main purposes in our life is, in fact, family history.

  2. I caught the theme of family history work too. What I find interesting is that this book was written over 100 years ago, and one of Anderson's big themes was on family history work. Today, the leaders of our church have also put a major emphasis on family history work. They want us to use the internet and our instant-result resources to dig deeper into our ancestry and find people whose work isn't done.
They are also still urging us to use literature to bring people unto Christ and spread the gospel. They may not be encouraging us to write a book, but to use social media, and create blogs, and use this new technology literature to spread the gospel.

  3. Family history was definitely a big theme of Added Upon. I loved how in the Spirit world, David praised and saw Rachel's value in big part to her work in Family History. She was well-known and beloved and essentially a savior to those people. I think we will be praised immensely in heaven for our temple and family history work down here.
